I was inspired to make this piece amidst the protests erupting across Iran in late 2025. When I spent time with my persian friends, I could put a face to the suffering abroad and that made it personal.

When Mahsa Amini was murdered over showing a strand of hair, modesty culture is a tool for power and control. When the female body is not inherently sexual, yet men possess the sole authority to define "sexual", modesty culture is a tool for power & control. I long for the very bodies that grow and bring us into being, to have the freedom to dictate their own lives.
